Producer Information
At Front Porch Farm, the steep hillsides are designated for vines and cover 14 acres, about a quarter of the cultivated land. In deciding to only grow Rhone varieties, we trusted these grapes’ natural affinity for our Mediterranean type climate, where full maturity can be reached while retaining freshness and complexity. Our unique terroir lies in the well-drained, steep hillsides (southern exposure for reds, northern exposure for whites) where vines are planted into small blocks surrounded by native vegetation of oaks, bay trees, and madrone. The whole property is embraced by a bend of the Russian River, which brings its cooling influence in the hot summer months. Because of the steep slopes of our vineyards, we use a crawler tractor (equipped with tracks for better traction and stability that also have the advantage of creating less soil compaction) for the occasional organic spray against mildew or tilling of the gravelly loam soils. All other tasks in the vineyard are performed by hand, or to be more specific, the three pairs of hands belonging to José, Primo and Amador who prune, weed, sucker, shoot position, tie, thin, hedge, leaf pull, and harvest every single one of the roughly 12,000 vines of our vineyards. These labor-intensive tasks all aim to improve the health of our soils and the health of our vines that will give us flavorful grapes in return.
