Reviews:
- Simon Field: A confident copper blush and an immediately seductive nose of soft spice, red currants and sweet almond. The blend here is dominated by the Pinots, with 50% Noir and 40% Meunier leaving only a whisper of elegant Chardonnay.
- Stephan Reinhardt: The bouquet is intensely fruity yet clear, fine and well-defined. Full-bodied, round, vinous and elegant on the palate, this cuvée reveals a grippy mineral freshness and lingering structure. Persistent finish.
Producer Information
Armand de Brignac (also known as Ace of Spades after its logo) is a Champagne brand, partly-owned by the rapper and businessman Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter. It is best known for its distinctive gold bottling and for its association with hip hop culture. Armand de Brignac has small levels of production, and prices are among the highest for Champagne. The brand first appeared in a Jay-Z video in 2006, after the rapper had taken exception to comments Frederic Rouzaud (Louis Roederer CEO) had made about his association with Cristal. Jay-Z bought the brand in 2014, and Armand de Brignac has since been featured in several music videos, most famously in the 2014 song “Feeling Myself” by Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj. The Champagnes have received some top accolades, including a perfect 100-point rating from leading Spanish critic José Peñín for the flagship Gold Brut. This wine is presented in a gold-plated bottle, while Blanc de Blancs and the Blanc de Noirs (introduced in 2015) are silver-plated and the rosé is metallic pink. The brand is produced by Champagne Cattier which have been practicing viticultre in Chigny-les-Roses since 1625. Today, vineyards in Rilly-la-Montagne and Ludes are also included within the company’s holdings. In the winery, each champagne bottled is a blend of three vintages, a unique practice adopted by Armand de Brignac. Together with Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter, the brand is partly-owned by LVMH’s Moët Hennessy.
